Teaching competency, professional commitment and job satisfaction

Education is the most powerful instrument whose effective use requires the strength of will, dedicated work and sacrifice. Since this instrument is in the hands of teachers, they must possess above mentioned qualities for its effective use. Education develops desirable habits, skills and attitudes which make an individual a good citizen.

Primary education is one of the cornerstones of development. It plays an important role in laying the proper foundation of child’s cultural, social, moral, emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual development. Primary education contributes to national development also.Article 45 of the directive principles of state policy in the constitution urges to provide free and compulsory education to all children below 14 years.

The importance of education is quite clear. Education is the knowledge of putting one’s potentials to maximum use. One can safely say that a human being is not in the proper sense till he is educated.

The quality of a nation depends upon the quality of its citizens. The quality of the citizens rests upon the quality of their education. The quality of their education depends upon the competence, dedication and quality of school teacher sit is not brick ad mortar of the classroom, but the dialogues rapport and interactions supported by deeds, between the learners and the teachers, all the time developing within its four walls can make or mar the destiny of the youngsters and in turn that of the nation.

The trend of the studies done on concepts professional development and job satisfaction shows that numerous studies have been done on these topic in the western countries but a little emphasis has been given to such studies in India. Studies have been done to see relation between aging and professional commitment among teachers. Results have shown that with increasing age Commitment of teachers decrease towards the profession.

Studies done on job satisfaction are mostly centered towards the organization like corporate offices but none of the studies whether in India or abroad is done on Job Satisfaction among teachers leaving the exceptional which have been done years back like one done by Jha (1986).

There have been no recent studies related to this aspect of teaching.Studies have been conducted on Teaching Competencies both in India and abroad but most or we can say nearly all of them are done among secondary school teacher or teachers at higher level of education. None of the studies are done keeping in mine teaching competencies of primary school teachers. So I decided to do a study to find the relationship among all three variables and there influence on each other.

Major Findings:

1. The result showed very high positive correlation between commitment to profession and job satisfaction level of primary school teachers. This means teachers who are satisfied with their job are also equally committed to their profession.

2. The result shows very low positive correlation between teaching competency and job satisfaction. This means job satisfaction level do not effect competency skills of the teachers.

3. The result shows very low positive correlation between professional commitment and teaching competency. This shows that professional commitment and teaching competency are not related to each other which means teacher are committed need not be competent and vice versa.

4. There is no significant difference between teaching competencies level of teachers with high and average levels of job satisfaction. Teachers with different level of job satisfaction did not showed any difference in level of their competency skills.

5. The t-value shows no significant difference between professional commitment level of teachers with high and average levels of job satisfaction. Teachers with different level of job satisfaction did not showed any difference in level of their commitment towards the profession.

6. There is no significant difference between teaching competencies level of teachers with high and low levels of job satisfaction.

7. The t-value shows no significant difference between professional commitment levels of teachers with high and low levels of job satisfaction.

8. The result shows no significant difference between teaching competencies level of teachers with average and low levels of job satisfaction

9. The t-value shows no significant difference between professional commitment level of teachers with average and low levels of job satisfaction.

Educational Implications:
1. Competent teachers are required in every educational institution so as to increase the effectiveness of the institution, it is necessary to know about professional commitment and how it is influenced by other variables. Teaching competency of the teachers is not dependent on job satisfaction but frequent workshops or interaction with experts can groom the competencies required by the teachers.

2. The present study reveals that commitment is influenced by the work situation and satisfaction of the teachers in those working conditions.

3. School authorities should identify the ways and means through which teachers can be provided with facilitating work environment which will influence their work and also commitment towards teaching. Satisfaction from the job is necessary for full devotion and commitment of teachers towards the profession.

Conclusion:

A teacher has a very respectable position in society. Being a teacher is to be a change agent transforming ideas into ideals and ideals into institutions which may spread the light of knowledge and wisdom into eternity.

A competent and committed teacher is in demand for today’s revolutionary era. Teacher commitment has been identified as one of the most crucial factor for the success of the education and schools. Teacher’s commitment is closely associated with their work performance.

In the present study an attempt was made by the researcher to study professional commitment, teaching competency and job satisfaction-their relationship and influence on each other and the results showed the high positive relation between professional commitment and job satisfaction but the relation between teaching competency and job satisfaction came to be positively very low for most of the dimensions and for some of the dimensions it came out as negative correlation.

But the point to be taken into consideration is that why do not the teachers have the job satisfaction and the simple answer is low wages, in fact, very low wages as compared to the living cost

Private schools pay as less as Rs 3000 per month, can you beat that??

Even a car washer earns more than this

What are U trying to suggest?

If a car washer is earning more than a teacher one should become a car washer? Or should the teacher be paid more to attain a greater level of stature ? Don’t measure the worth of an individual in petty material terms!!

A teacher will always enjoy a greater degree of respect no matter how much he earns. In fact, anyone involved in the field of knowledge commands a greater respect than people earning millions!!

It’s another thing that teacher should be paid enough to sustain his existence in a proper way.

Anyway ,for your information, teachers in the government sector are well paid.If private institutions are paying less,it simply means teachers are facing exploitation.

Yes, teachers are still paid 3000-5000 whereas this much amount can be easily earned by the housekeepers, so what's the use of getting the degrees when they can't even give you a good life.

I'll never pick a job of a teacher because i will be better paid in other sectors. And people who are involved in this sector does not work properly because they are not paid upto the mark simple.

i remember my hindi teacher, sleeping in the class all the time. he he he

And this is not 18th century where teachers will act like 'dharmatamas'.

They are humans and have a family to look after

Very interesting response.Allow me to draw some conclusions in lighter vain!!

1.Since teacher is a familywallah,he needs to be paid more.It means it’s not wrong if teacher is giving tuition because that means he/she is highly conscious of his/her duties towards family.

2 The success mantra for teachers:Dharmatmas are sufferers in 21st cetury. So be a high-profile’thug’ in form of a teacher to attain greater degree of success. It’s not surprising that we are having students like Shahrukh Khan who are not hesitant in wooing Sushmitas(read female teachers.Kya Kare Twenty-First Century Hai Na Bhaiyaa..

3.No games period.Students can utilize the Hindi period to play games.Better there is no Hindi period at all.Vaise Bhi Hindi Bolane Waalo Ki Kaha Izzat Hoti Hai 21st century mein.Jai Ho Angrezzi Ki!!

There is no satisfaction in the teaching profession. Teaching these days is the last option as a profession.

Education is the most powerful instrument of bringing the change, either the positive or negative. That’s why RSS concentrates on educational institutes so much. They are poisoning the minds of children from very childhood.

There is no doubt that education is a very noble profession but, in India it has not been assigned the dignity and attention that it deserves. In a nation where just 25% percent of young graduates passing out every year are EMPLOYABLE, there is a need for some serious thought to revamp the system.

That’s an excellent idea.

But do you think when there is pressure to enroll almost everyone under various quotas it’s ever be possible to revamp the system in desired way !!Today, there is pressure on both IITs and IIMs to accommodate students belonging to various quotas! Against this backdrop, what are the chances to rope in quality education ?

@Arvind

well I feel quality education begins much earlier than the IIT’s and the IIM’s.Reservations are no doubt a big handicap to improving the quality of education, but the point here is that the quality of education has degraded at the very basic level. Ethics apart, at the school level there is a lack of professionalism among teachers. They prefer to teach well at home when they give tutions to students rather than in the class. At times they even pressurise students to take tuitions from them.

The payscale of teachers in the government sector may be better than their counterparts in the private sector but that is hardly of any use.Govt schools are worse.

Lets be practical and think at the grassroots level...there is no competency, hardly any professionalism or commitment and i guess Job satisfaction is just a need and not a passion for most , if not all.

A country where basic educational rights are denied to the girl child in many parts ,there is something seriously wrong.

I agree with your views. My reference to IIT’s was only to point out that we are not interested in upgrading the quality of education.

You need to analyze that what makes one say ”Govt schools are worse ”.It’s really unfortunate because providing education is not the task of private institutions.

Well, there is some problem with collective mindset of this nation that considers making money to be the ultimate goal.A ”havaldar” is considered to be more successful than a teacher in our society.Because he makes more money-via uper ki kamai- than a teacher.

No wonder teachers are more interested in making more money via tuitions etc.As a result ”Guruji” is no longer respected by the pupil.

From a monetary perspective, I don’t know why anyone would become a teacher. Perhaps when people leave the field, teachers will earn a decent salary.

@Annaly,

In India ”Monetary perspective” rules the roost !!Money is Lord of all Lords in India.
